Healey Mendicino, president of Port of Subs, recently joined Emerging Franchise Brands to discuss how she is steering the beloved sandwich franchise into a new phase of growth. Founded in 1972 and long managed as a family business, Port of Subs has become known for its freshly sliced, high-quality subs and strong community ties. Now with over 130 locations, the franchise is setting its sights on national expansion under the guidance of new ownership—a family office led by franchise veterans Dave and Gail Linniger, founders of Remax, and their partners at Area 15 Ventures.

Healey, who started as Port of Subs’ 100th franchisee and later joined corporate leadership, explains that the transition from family-owned to professionally managed was significant. It involved shifting to a regional developer model where regional leaders open and manage multiple locations. This strategy aims to accelerate growth without losing the brand’s community-focused essence. Under this model, Port of Subs has committed to 230 additional units across the U.S. over the next five years, ensuring each regional developer is a franchisee themselves who knows the local market well.

As Healey notes, Port of Subs’ commitment to its values and its franchisee-centric approach are essential in this new era. She emphasizes that emerging franchisors should build a solid foundation with clear operational systems and a focused product offering. For Port of Subs, this means scaling with integrity, continuing to serve as a neighborhood sandwich shop with a commitment to quality and community. With an ambitious growth plan and a seasoned leadership team, Port of Subs is positioned to bring its signature sandwiches to communities nationwide.
